“Nature, Art, and the Science of Creativity”
Caryn Babaian, professor and artist, was recently featured on the PBS Series “The Secret Life of Scientists” because of the creative way she uses art to teach the natural sciences. In this aspect, she
is following in the footsteps of Leonardo Da Vinci and other
artist/physicians of the early 19th century who combined both art and their love of natural forms to explore science and create art. Caryn will explore how the evolution of the human mind and art are entwined in the study of science.

“Good Enough: One Man’s Memoir on the Price of the Dream”
Leon Bass will share his recently published living history of some of the greatest moments of 20th Century America: from his anger at his treatment as a soldier in the Deep South, to witness the cruelties of Buchenwald, to his awakening to new possibilities as he listened to Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington in 1963. Dr. Bass asks, “Is the price too high?” The price to realize the dream, he explains, is to stand up and be counted by doing the right thing, whether large or small, every day. Autographed copies of Dr. Bass’ book will be available.
Tuesday, July 26 7 PM “The Civil War in Film”
On the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, professor Jerry Millevoi will look at cinematic portrayals of the Civil War and dispel some myths commonly perpetuated in film. He’ll also examine the “Lost Cause of the Confederacy;” white Southerners who sought consolation in attributing their loss to factors beyond their control and to betrayals of their heroes and their cause. Some of the films to be analyzed are Shenendoah; Gone with the Wind; Gettysburg; Glory; Gods and Generals; Cold Mountain; Seraphim Falls; and Ken Burns’ The Civil War.
Tuesday, August 9 7 PM
“The Mysterious Music of the Theramin”
Mano Divina, master of the Theramin and leader of the Divine Hand Chamber Ensemble, will demonstrate a most unusual musical instrument -- one that literally produces music out of thin air!He will also share the darkly fascinating history of the Theramin, which dates back over 100 years,
involved charges of international espionage, and nearly caused this electrifying instrument to fade from existence.
Tuesday, August 23 7 PM “The World’s Oldest Art Medium”
One might think that early man first created art with burnt wood much like our modern charcoal or used a primitive mixture of berries and a medium similar to our present day oils or even watercolors. Not so. Artist Mike McAllister will talk about and demonstrate the world's oldest and most
permanent art material in a presentation he has shared across the US and Mexico.

"An Irish Evening of Stories and Music"
The
candlelit Middletown Friends Meetinghouse was the perfect setting for
LCA's Irish Evening of storytelling and music on Friday, March 19.
Bagpiper Jamie Bryson entertained guests as they strolled in from the
parking lot on this balmy spring evening. Once inside the historic
Meetinghouse, guests were treated to lilting Celtic tunes performed by
harp player Mary Bryson and captivating Irish folktales told by
professional storyteller Ray Gray. Guests enjoyed this evening so much
that LCA will likely add the ancient art of storytelling to its annual
repertoire of events.

"Fabric of Life In Langhorne"
Community Quilt Project
LCA Community Quilt on display at Harvest Day
Langhorne
Council for the Arts announces the completion of the "Fabric of Life in
Langhorne" Community Quilt. Forty-four quilt squares from individuals,
families, community groups, and houses of worship tell the story of
life in the Borough, present and past. The "Fabric of Life in Langhorne" Community Quilt made its debut at
Harvest Day, October 31, 2009. It was displayed again at the
"Gathering of Quilts" Community Quilt Show on November 21, and will
soon find a permanent home in Council Chambers of Langhorne Borough
Hall, where Borough residents can enjoy this unique "time capsule."
A keepsake book with photos of each of the squares with essays that explain the history,
emotion, or motivation behind each creative view is available now! Funds
raised through the sale of fabric squares and the “Fabric of Life in
Langhorne” anthology will support the Langhorne Council for the Arts
scholarship fund and other arts experiences in the community. Click HERE for more information about the "Fabric of Life In Langhorne" Quilt Book.
LCA extends heartfelt appreciation to all who participated in this community art project.
2009 Very Special Evening in the Arts

The
charming Anna Mary Williamson Library was the ideal setting for our
first Art Show and Silent Auction. Original artwork from Mary Bryson,
Connie McHugh, Tonia Sabitini, and Michael Wommack was on display in
the main room, where visitors could also sample wine and many homemade
desserts. Tonia Sabatini displays her photographs.
The talented Bryson F
amily provided lovely background music,
featuring Mary on harp, Jim on bagpipes, Frances on viola, and Gordon
on cello. The back room was used for the silent auction. Original
work and giclee prints, generously contributed by Nina and Michael
Wommack, Flo Shadler, Tonia Sabitini, Mary Bryson, and Ian Acker, were
included in the silent auction, along with golf passes donated by
Middletown Country Club. Bidders used their secret "artist alias" to
add fun and mystery to the bidding. At the end of a most enjoyable
night, 30 pieces of artwork found new homes with the winning bidders,
and over $900 was raised for the LCA scholarship fund!
In addition to the artists and musicians mentioned above, special
thanks go to Jim Meier, Larry Langhans, and the board of Historic
Langhorne Association for allowing us to use their building for this
event; to Barry Truchil who served as our MC; to all the LCA board
members for providing refreshments and lots of "behind the scenes"
efforts; and to everyone in the community who attended the event and
contributed to its success!
Arts in the Garden Tours
Lush private and public gardens in historic Langhorne Borough provided a lovely showcase for local artists and musicians during the annual LCA Arts in the Garden Tours. "Garden tourists" come from miles around to stroll through the gardens, watch artists at work, and enjoy harp, bagpipe, guitar, handbell and other delightful music. The attendance at the 2009 Arts in the Garden Tour doubled from last year, and so did the funds raised for the LCA scholarship fund! Our sincere thanks go to the gracious garden owners, artists, musicians, and greeters who gave so generously of their time and talents to make this year's Tour a great success!!
Please check our Facebook page for photos from this year's Tour. Artists, musicians, garden owners, and volunteer greeters who would like to participate in future Tours should contact: info@langhornearts.org.

The Neshaminy High School Jazz Band wows the crowd every spring in a concert co-sponsored by Langhorne Open Space, Inc.

Paint Out 2008
In the tradition of
plein air, local artists, including the Artists-at-the-Farm, gathered at the Merrick property on Bellevue Avenue to paint, sketch, and commune with others engaged in the creative spirit of the day. Music, refreshments, and the children's tent added to the fun. The community enjoyed the opportunity to watch artists at work. This event was suppported by LOSI and LCA.
Artist Connie McHugh paints a view of the Merrick House.
Community Involvement
LCA participates in community events such as the Memorial Day Parade and the Langhorne Business Association Harvest Day.

Artist and LCA Board member Michael Wommack drives the LCA "float" in the Memorial Day Parade.
